US Women’s National Team hammered by Sweden in opening Tokyo 2020 match

It was reported that Sweden laid down an early marker in the women’s Olympic football competition, hammering the US Women’s National Team 3-0 on Wednesday.

Stina Blackstenius’ brace and Lina Hurtig’s thumping header gave Sweden a deserved victory, with the US looking a shadow of the side that won the World Cup two years ago.

Sweden was unquestionably the better team from the first whistle to the last and the USWNT, which came into this Olympics as a strong favorite, has much to improve on in the coming games against New Zealand and Australia should it want to win a fifth gold medal.

This historic result for Sweden will give the team confidence it can go one better than Rio 2016, where it fell to Germany at the final hurdle in the gold medal match.

For the US, the defeat ends a 44-game unbeaten run — 40 wins and four draws — that had stretched all the way back to January 2019 when it lost 3-1 to France in a friendly.

Scintillating Swedes

Sweden got the better of the US the last time these two teams met on the Olympic stage, coming out on top after a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals five years ago in Brazil.

Becky Sauerbrunn told the Guardian that defeat was “one of the worst results that the senior national team has had in a major tournament,” saying it provided extra motivation going into the victorious 2019 World Cup campaign and this Olympics.

However, there wasn’t much sign of that motivation during the opening exchanges of the match in Tokyo’s Ajinomoto Stadium — before which both teams took a knee in the empty arena — as Sweden exerted its dominance from the opening whistle.

The Swedes soon got the goal their early play deserved as Sofia Jakobsson’s whipped cross was glanced home brilliantly by Blackstenius at the near post after 25 minutes.

The US had barely managed to get out of its own half in this opening 45 minutes, much less get any sort of foothold in the game, with Sweden enjoying more than 60% of possession.

Blackstenius had a wonderful opportunity to double Sweden’s lead just before the break, controlling a long pass brilliantly on her chest but just getting the ball stuck under her feet to allow US keeper Alyssa Naeher to come out and smother the chance.

Given the extent of the talent in the US squad, however, it was always going to be unlikely Sweden could contain its opponents for the entire half. It was Rose Lavelle who had the chance to equalize, but her header from a long ball into the box crashed against the outside of the post.

That it was the reigning world champion’s only real chance of note in the first half was a testament to Sweden’s superiority, the yellow shirts swarming the US players in midfield and not allowing them a moment to relax on the ball.

The only negative from Sweden’s perspective was that it had only managed to open up a one-goal lead — would the team rue that profligacy in front of goal?

USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski made two substitutions at the start of the second half, with the vastly experienced Carli Lloyd and Julie Ertz coming on to replace Alex Morgan and Samantha Mewis.

Ertz seemed to immediately breath new life into the US team, but just when it looked like the momentum of the game was shifting, Sweden doubled its advantage.

Blackstenius this time picked up the scraps at the far post after a Swedish corner caused mayhem in the US box and poked the ball past Naeher into the roof of the net. From there, it only got worse for the US team.

After substitute Megan Rapinoe hit the post when she perhaps she should have scored, Sweden put an exclamation mark next to its performance as Hurtig rose high in the box to head home from Hanna Glas’ cross.

Yes ooo… the woman who allegedly caused Tour de france crash has been arrested.

The woman who allegedly held out a banner causing the crash of dozens of cyclists during the first stage of the Tour de France last Saturday has been identified and is undergoing police questioning, the Brest prosecutor’s office said.

The accident happened 45 kilometers from the finish of the first stage of the race on Saturday — from Brest to Landerneau — when a female spectator on the side of the road held up a big sign which caused the pile up.

It’s not evident what she meant to say on the sign which said ‘ALLEZ OPI-OMI !’ in French and German, which translates to ‘Go Grandma and Grandpa.’

According to the race’s video coverage of Saturday’s incident, the sign hit German rider Tony Martin who was cycling near the head of the pack. Martin fell, which led to the subsequent crash of dozens of riders behind him.

Cyclists fell en masse and the crash left bikes and bodies tangled in the road. The fall held the race up for several minutes.

Gendarmes from the Finistere region had posted an appeal on Facebook to track down the female spectator who apparently had left the scene before their arrival.

On Sunday, the Finistère gendarmerie announced the opening of a judicial investigation into “involuntary injuries with disability not exceeding three months by a deliberate violation of an obligation of safety or prudence.”

The woman could face up to two years in prison and a fine of $35,000 according to the Brest prosecutor’s office.

The opening stages of this year’s Tour have been marred by a series of crashes. On Tuesday, during stage four, the peloton halted the race for about a minute in a silent protest for safer racing conditions.

Restraining order petition against Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer includes graphic details

A request for a domestic violence restraining order from a woman accusing Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer of assault includes graphic details, photos as well as messages between the two.

The 27-year-old woman, whom her attorney said prefers to be identified as “Ms. Hill,” said in the document, filed in the County of Los Angeles Superior Court and dated Tuesday, that while she had consented to sex with Bauer on two occasions, she alleges Bauer did things to her that she did not agree or consent to during both encounters. She alleged this included sticking his fingers down her throat, choking her until she was unconscious, punching her in the face and punching her vagina.

Medical notes filed with her petition state the woman “sustained significant head and facial trauma.”

“As the shock has worn off, I recognize the seriousness of the sexual assault I endured,” the woman said in her written statement. “I do not want Trevor to put anyone else through what I suffered.”

The Pasadena Police Department is looking into the allegation, a spokesman with the department said on Tuesday.

A temporary restraining order was granted, and a hearing has been scheduled for July 23 to determine if there will be a finding of domestic violence and a permanent restraining order, the woman’s attorney, Marc Garelick said.

Bauer has denied the allegations, and his representation told the media on Wednesday that temporary restraining orders do not require corroboration and they plan to defend the player against the allegations at the upcoming hearing. They declined to comment further.

An earlier statement Tuesday from his agent, Jon Fetterolf, said: “Mr. Bauer had a brief and wholly consensual sexual relationship initiated by Ms. Hill beginning in April 2021. We have messages that show Ms. Hill repeatedly asking for ‘rough’ sexual encounters involving requests to be ‘choked out’ and slapped in the face. In both of their encounters, Ms. Hill drove from San Diego to Mr. Bauer’s residence in Pasadena, Calif. where she went on to dictate what she wanted from him sexually and he did what was asked. Following each of her only two meetings with Mr. Bauer, Ms. Hill spent the night and left without incident, continuing to message Mr. Bauer with friendly and flirtatious banter. In the days following their second and final encounter, Ms. Hill shared photos of herself and indicated that she had sought medical care for a concussion. Mr. Bauer responded with concern and confusion, and Ms. Hill was neither angry nor accusatory.

“Mr. Bauer and Ms. Hill have not corresponded in over a month and have not seen each other in over six weeks. Her basis for filing a protection order is nonexistent, fraudulent, and deliberately omits key facts, information, and her own relevant communications. Any allegations that the pair’s encounters were not 100% consensual are baseless, defamatory, and will be refuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

MLB is aware of the investigation and looking into the allegation.

“The Dodgers were made aware of the allegations against Trevor Bauer late this afternoon and immediately contacted Major League Baseball, which will be handling this matter,” the team said in a statement Tuesday. “The Dodgers take any allegations of this nature very seriously, but will have no further comment at this time.”

Bauer, 30, is the most recent National League Cy Young Award winner.

A 10-year major league veteran, he pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Reds before joining the Dodgers in 2021

Woman says she was unconscious after being choked

According to her temporary restraining order request, the woman said she and Bauer met through Instagram in April. She said that on April 21, she drove from San Diego to Los Angeles to meet Bauer at his house. After midnight, she said she consented to having sex with Bauer and that she said it was OK to be “a little rough.”

She said in her statement that Bauer asked if she had been choked before during sex. She said responded yes, “meaning that putting his hands around my neck and applying light pressure.” She alleges Bauer then put his fingers down her throat “in an aggressive manner,” and he stopped when she asked.

She alleges he wrapped her hair around her neck and choked her unconscious, then had anal sex with her without her consent, injuring her.

The next morning, she alleges Bauer “laughed and said to me in a joking manner, ‘You feeling a little sore this morning?'”

The woman said the two continued to communicate for the next three weeks using Instagram and text messaging.

The woman said she went to Bauer’s house again, arriving just after midnight on May 16. She said they would go on to have sex.

This time with Bauer, she said, he asked her to agree to a safe word. She said he also asked what was off-limits, and she answered not to put fingers in her throat.

She alleges in the document that about five minutes into sex, he choked her to unconsciousness and she awoke “extremely disoriented.”

She alleges Bauer rolled her onto her back, and he resumed having sex and began punching her face several times. Then, she alleges in her petition, Bauer flipped her onto her stomach and began choking her with hair, and she said she lost consciousness again. She alleges he also repeatedly punched her vagina.

She alleges Bauer repeatedly said, “You’re safe, I’m here. You’re safe,” as well as saying, “I would never do those things to you if it wasn’t sexually.”

She said she left later that morning.

The woman said during the day she threw up and had severe headaches and checked herself in at an emergency room at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center.

The woman said two San Diego Police Department officers came to speak with her, and she said at the time she “attempted to downplay what occurred out of concern for my privacy and what my statements might lead to.”

She said she later gave a statement to two Pasadena Police Department officers.

The woman wrote in her petition that she has waited to bring this request for a domestic violence restraining order “to see how the criminal investigation would proceed.”

She said in the document: “One of the last text messages I sent him was, ‘I appreciate all of your offers to help, but the best way you can help me is to never do that to anyone else ever again.’ To this, Trevor responded, ‘I would never do anything to hurt anyone. That includes you.'”

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer is accused of assault

The Pasadena Police Department is looking into an allegation of assault involving Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer, a spokesman with the department told the media on Tuesday.

“It is an active investigation,” said Lt. Bill Grisafe.

The attorney for the accuser, Marc Garelick, said in a statement that his client, whom he refers to as “Ms. Hill,” has “sought and obtained an order for Protection from the Court against Mr. Trevor Bauer, under the Domestic Violence Prevention Act.”

“The order is a result of a recent assault that took place at the hands of Mr. Bauer where Ms. Hill suffered severe physical and emotional pain,” Garelick said. “Our goal is to keep Mr. Bauer from contacting our client in any way possible.”

Bauer denies the allegations, according to a statement from his agent, Jon Fetterolf.
